Rigging Flying Scot 4637
We finally got to take the boat out this weekend. Some generous members of the Lake Townsend Yacht Club (It's not as pretentious as it sounds!) spent some time Saturday helping us tune the standing rigging and demonstrating the best ways to launch and retrieve the boat from the trailer. Luke, Steve (our helper), and I then put the boat through some sea trials.
On Sunday, the whole family took our maiden voyage on the Scot. After successfully rigging and launching the boat we sailed gracefully through the jetty and tacked our way up the lake. We had a wonderful time, sailing beautifully and living the dream for about 40 minutes. AND THEN... THE WIND DIED!!
It seems obvious, but sailing is no fun without wind. That doesn't really hit home until you are sitting still on a glassy lake! The girls let us know pretty quickly when they were no longer having any fun. We will consider it a successful first sail, despite having to paddle back to the dock. There were no injuries, no damage to the boat, and we didn't make Caroline walk the plank (though we considered it)!
I love sailing. But perhaps, a small outboard wouldn't be a bad idea. How many months till Christmas?
