We Are Those People

“We are those people.” This is what April said to me during the break of our first Birthing Class. I wasn’t sure what she meant. “We are the people in the class with twins.” As we went around the room earlier in the class introducing our neighbors (you’ve got to love ice breakers), we kept waiting to hear someone else say they were having multiples. Nope! Just us. This was made especially evident when the instructor turned to the rest of the class and said, “Don’t you feel better? At least you’re not having twins. Think how easy it will be.” We are the people the other 10-12 couples in the class will be talking about for the next 5 weeks whenever they think about how difficult a baby will be. That was not exactly the confidence boost we were hoping to gain from these classes.

If my posts become increasingly graphic over the next few weeks, you will have to forgive me. Given all of the medical professionals in my life, it is not abnormal to hear about the gory details of surgery, the tales of trauma, or just the most disgusting thing encountered over the course of the day. Usually such conversations take place over dinner. Although these stories seldom phase me, it was exceptionally awkward when the instructor launched into her discussion of menstrual type cramps, leaking and/or gushing fluid, various discharges and spotting, and my personal favorite: THE MUCUS PLUG. Give me a break. I don‘t even know these people. AND, WHAT IN THE WORLD IS A MUCUS PLUG? On second thought, I am sure that will be cleared up in week 2. (By the way, if you are slightly uncomfortable at this point, welcome to my world.)

The instructor also advised the ladies in class that work that they should sit down and take a break during the workday if they feel tired… “UNLESS THEY ARE IN BRAIN SURGERY.” Obviously this a problem for April since she is typically in surgery of some sort. This is one of the reasons that she and her Doctor decided that it was appropriate for April to go out of work. Given this, Friday was officially her last day of work until after the twins are born. Therefore, we are currently accepting invitations for dinner!!!

As an update on the babies, we had an ultrasound on Friday. Based on measurements, both babies are estimated to weigh 3 pounds and one ounce. Hard to believe April is carrying over six pounds of babies already. The babies and mom are all doing well.
